At first glance, it may seem ridiculous, but smart marketers are engaging online influencers and utilizing their web presences to directly drive sales of their products.  As I was browsing the FastCompany website this evening, I came across the article “How Top Style Bloggers Are Earning $1 Million A Year”. These style bloggers are joining the 1% as members of the highest paid professionals.  And these aren’t your typical big-name-university-educated MBA grads working at Fortune 500 companies, but maybe they ought to be.  These style bloggers are delivering measurable results and ROI for minimal corporate investment while driving millions in sales and earning themselves a handsome profit at the same time, all while dictating their own schedules.

So now who is the real marketing leader? The traditional corporate marketer or the “new wave” marketer/blogger who has turned themselves into a brand of their own while being paid to promote products that they would have purchased for themselves but received for free?  I am going to go with what is behind door #2 please.

Now, I am not saying that these bloggers don’t work hard – and haven’t spent countless hours building their own reputations, own brand and sphere of influence – because they have.  It just so happens that they are now in the position to enjoy the fruits of their labor and most of them are under 40 years old.  So I guess I am just jealous. Where do I sign up?  I guess I can start by making sure my address below is listed correctly so companies know where to send the free product…and the check.
